I'll be honest with you: Holbox is no longer the undiscovered paradise it once was. The island has grown a lot in recent years and some problems have arisen:
- Flooded streets: After heavy rains, some areas are left with a lot of water and mud.
- Mosquitoes: There are many, especially at dusk (insect repellent is MANDATORY — and I learned that the hard way).
- High prices: Everything costs 20-30% more than in Playa del Carmen.
- Noise pollution: The golf carts are driving around all day and making noise.
- Unstable internet signal: Prepare for a forced disconnection at some point.
The story that taught me to never go out in Holbox without insect repellent:
On one of my visits to the island, I woke up at 6 a.m. full of energy to film the sunrise. I left the hotel excited, equipment in hand—and completely without insect repellent. In less than two minutes outside, I was surrounded by a cloud of mosquitoes the likes of which I had never seen in years of living on the Riviera Maya.
I went back to the room before I could even record a second of video, covered in bites. Holbox has real mosquitoes. — very different from those you find in Cancun or Playa. The combination of mangroves, wet sandy streets, and high humidity creates the perfect environment for them. Bring two bottles of strong DEET repellent and don't underestimate this.
My conclusion: Is it worth it? Yes, 100%! But adjust your expectations. It's not an untouched paradise where you walk barefoot all the time. It's an island with unique charm, incredible experiences, and some infrastructure challenges. If you accept that, you'll fall in love!

What is bioluminescence? These are microorganisms called dinoflagellates that emit light when the water moves. Each of their movements creates luminous blue-green trails in the water.
My personal experience with Holbox bioluminescence:
I've seen bioluminescence in other places around the world. But the night I spent in Punta Cocos, in Holbox, was unlike anything else. Every step in the water created trails of electric-blue light around my feet—it felt like I was walking on fallen stars in the sea. But what left me completely speechless was looking at the horizon after getting out of the water.
On a clear, moonless night, you can see the lights of Playa del Carmen on one side and Cancun on the other.Two of the biggest tourist attractions in the Mexican Caribbean visible to the naked eye — while you're in a place without traffic lights, without asphalt, without car noise. It's one of the most unique perspectives I've ever experienced.
And the sky… I can't describe it. I'd never seen so many stars in my life. Holbox has one of the lowest light pollution levels in the Caribbean, and on a new moon night, the Milky Way appears with a clarity that seems unreal to those who live in the city.

- Perfect for amazing photos
- Some charming beach clubs
- At night, it's the best spot for bioluminescence — and the place from where you can see the lights of Cancun and Playa del Carmen on the horizon.

- By bicycle: 20-25 minutes cycling from the center.
- Golf cart: 10-15 minutes (R$ 80-100/hour rental)
- Walking: 40 minutes (only if you enjoy walking)
