Playa del Carmen, or just “Playa” to the locals, is a city located on the Caribbean coast in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is located in the Riviera Maya region, about 70 km south of Cancun and 65 km north of Tulum. This coastal city is known for its white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and beautiful beaches. and a vibrant nightlife, being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region.
Playa del Carmen's location is ideal for those who want to enjoy the nightlife and discover the wonders of the Riviera Maya during the day. The city is close to most of the region's main attractions.

Best time to go to Playa del Carmen

The best time to visit Playa is during the dry season, from December to April. During this period, the weather is pleasant, with mild temperatures and less chance of rain, making it ideal for enjoying the beaches and outdoor activities.
However, it's important to note that this is also peak tourist season, which means prices can be higher and places can be busier.
If you are looking for a balance between good weather and less crowding, The months of May and June are a great option, as they still offer favorable weather conditions, but with fewer tourists.
How to go to Playa del Carmen?

Brazilians who wish to visit Playa del Carmen must first arrive at Cancun International Airport. From there, the cheapest way to get to Playa del Carmen is by taking the ADO bus, which costs approximately 70 reais.
Another safe and hassle-free way to get to Playa is by hiring a transfer. The advantage is that you are greeted by an agent at the airport and on the way you can get exclusive tips from a local. What do you think?

What to do in Playa del Carmen
Explore Fifth Avenue

Quinta Avenida is the main street in Playa, where everything happens. No matter where you walk, you will definitely pass by “Quinta” (as it is known by the locals).
Quinta Avenida is full of bars, excellent restaurants and is a shopping paradise in Playa del Carmen, with boutiques, jewelry stores, souvenir shops and much more. Whether day or night, it is the place to be and have a great time (it has an incredible vibe there). But below you will see in detail what to do on Quinta Avenida.
Walk along Paseo del Carmen

Paseo del Carmen is an open-air shopping mall with several famous stores, cafes, fast food and a really cool atmosphere.
It is located at the beginning of Fifth Avenue and is the perfect place to walk and shop in the late afternoon, when the sun has given a break.
Church of Our Lady of Carmen

As in many cities in Mexico, the most important temple in the city is a church. The Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen is located close to Paseo del Carmen, at the beginning of Quinta.
In addition to regular masses, the church also holds weddings for foreigners, so if you want to get married facing the Caribbean Sea, this is the ideal place in Playa del Carmen to make your dream come true.
Participate in the Guelaguetza of Playa del Carmen

If you are one of those travelers who enjoy learning more about the culture of the country you are visiting, participating in the Guelaguetza is an excellent idea.

Sacred Mayan Crossing

Continuing on the cultural front, the Travessia Maya is another unmissable event for travelers interested in local culture. For two days in May, a ceremony is held that has a tradition of over a thousand years (that's right, a thousand years).
It is a sacred journey in canoes from the mainland to the Cozumel Island, where men and women pay homage to Ixchel, the goddess of health, fertility, vegetation and water.
Today, this ritual is performed by more than 400 canoes manned by men and women. It is truly an unmissable cultural spectacle!
Discover Cozumel

Being in Playa del Carmen, Visiting Cozumel is extremely easy and convenient. The island of Cozumel is located just about 19 miles off the coast of Playa del Carmen, and there are several daily ferries that run between the two destinations. The ferry ride takes about 45 minutes, making it possible to even take a day trip to Cozumel and return to Playa del Carmen the same day.
Once in Cozumel, there are several must-see attractions. The island is world famous for its diving spots, such as Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, where visitors can explore vibrant coral reefs and rich marine life.
For those who prefer land-based activities, the Punta Sur Ecological Park is a nature reserve that is home to historic lighthouses, lagoons and a diversity of fauna and flora. In addition, the Cozumel Island Museum offers a comprehensive overview of the island's history and culture.
And, of course, we can't forget the paradisiacal beaches of Cozumel, like Playa Palancar and Playa San Francisco, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the Caribbean sun.
Visit a water park

Visiting Xel-Há is an unforgettable experience for those seeking a combination of nature, adventure and relaxation. Xel-Há is one of the largest natural aquariums in the world, where visitors can swim and snorkel in crystal-clear lagoons surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and an impressive variety of marine life.
A convenience of visiting Xel-Há from Playa del Carmen is remarkable. It is located just 47 km south of Playa del Carmen, which means it is about a 45-minute drive. Many tour operators offer direct transportation packages from Playa del Carmen, making it even easier to get to the park.
Within Xel-Há, some of the must-see attractions include the Paradise River, where you can float peacefully on buoys, the Cliff of Courage, a jumping off point for the more adventurous, and the Mangrove Tunnel, where you can paddle in kayaks while observing the rich biodiversity of the mangrove.
We also pack any the park offers activities such as zip lining, walks and even interactions with manatees, making the visit to Xel-Há a complete and diverse experience.
Visit Mayan ruins

Visiting the ruins of Tulum is to delve into the rich history and culture of the Mayan civilization. Located on the edge of the Caribbean Sea, the ruins offer a unique combination of archaeology and stunning views. Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Mayans, and its architecture and strategic location reveal much about the city’s importance as a major seaport.
Take a day trip from Playa del Carmen to Tulum is extremely convenient, as the distance between the two destinations is only about 65 km, which represents a vApproximately 1 hour drive. Many tour operators in Playa del Carmen offer day trips to Tulum, making transportation and organizing your visit easier.
Upon arriving at the ruins, some of the main attractions include the Castillo, which is the most iconic building in the area, situated on top of a cliff overlooking the sea. There is also the Temple of Frescoes, with well-preserved murals depicting Mayan life and cosmology.
And, of course, you can't forget the beach just below the ruins, an area of white sand and crystal clear waters, perfect for a refreshing dip after exploring the archaeological site.
A combination of Mayan history with natural beauty makes a visit to Tulum an unmissable experience for anyone in Playa del Carmen.

Watching Cirque du Soleil’s “La Joya” was a truly magical and unforgettable experience. From the moment I entered the theater, I was transported to a world of fantasy and enchantment. Playa del Carmen is surrounded by several cenotes, Natural wonders that are underground pools formed by the erosion of limestone rock. These cenotes are ideal places for diving, snorkeling or simply taking a refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters. Here are four of the top cenotes near Playa del Carmen:
Chaak Tun Cenote

Located just 10 minutes from downtown Playa del Carmen, Cenote Chaak Tun is an underground wonder. With impressive stalactites and stalagmites, this cenote offers a mystical swimming and snorkeling experience in its cool, crystal-clear waters. Natural light streaming in from above creates a magical ambiance.

This open cenote, also known as Ponderosa, It is surrounded by lush vegetation and is ideal for snorkeling and diving. Its turquoise waters are home to small fish and its depth varies, making it suitable for both swimmers and divers.

One of my favorites and just a short drive from Playa, Cenote Azul is a large cenote with clear, shallow waters, perfect for families and those looking to relax in a natural setting. With several areas to jump into the water and a variety of tropical fish, it’s a popular spot for visitors.

- Quinta Alegría Shopping Mall: A modern shopping center with famous brands, ideal for shopping for clothes, accessories and electronics.
3. Gastronomy on Fifth Avenue
- The Chango Cave: Restaurant known for its authentic Mexican food in a jungle-like setting.
- The Stove: For lovers of tacos and traditional Mexican food.
- At Celine: A French bakery perfect for breakfast or an afternoon snack.
- Ah Cacao Chocolate Coffee: Ideal for chocolate lovers, it offers everything from hot drinks to brownies and ice cream.

Beach Club in Playa del Carmen
Beach clubs are one of the coolest things to do in Playa if you like to party and have an atmosphere full of beautiful people and lots of music.
There are several to choose from, but I will recommend the 3 best in the city. If you want to enjoy a beach without paying, I recommend you visit Playacar in Playa del Carmen.
The entrance is at the beginning of Fifth Avenue, before Paseo del Carmen.
Mamita's Beach Club

O Mamita's It is the most famous beach club in Playa del Carmen, where there are several parties with famous DJs and the music never stops.
You can rent sun loungers or stay in a cabin (it all depends on how much you want to spend).
kool beach club

Kool is one of my favorite Beach Clubs and is right next to Mamita's and offers the same sun lounger rental scheme.
Kool has a more relaxed atmosphere (if it is not high season) and even offers a monitor service that can look after your children in a special area for little ones.
The food is decent, but I recommend the breakfast, which is very filling and reasonably priced.
Coralina

Coralina is the newest of the three, and although it is smaller, it has a spectacular environment.
It’s the place for those who enjoy a party on the beach with lots of “beautiful people”.
The house offers excellent cocktails and great music so you will never forget your stay in Playa del Carmen.
What to do in Playa del Carmen during the day

Mamitas Beach Club
Playa del Carmen is a destination full of daytime activities that delight tourists from all over the world.
Starting with the beaches, Playa Mamitas is one of the most famous and busiest in the city. Located close to the city center, it is known for its vibrant atmosphere, white sand and crystal clear waters.
Along the beach, you'll find several beach clubs, such as Mamitas Beach Club and Coralina Daylight Club, where you can rent sun loungers, enjoy tropical cocktails and listen to live music.
For seafood lovers, Los Aguachiles is an excellent option, known for its fresh ceviches and tuna tostadas. And also my favorite, El Doctorcito. Both restaurants are worth the experience.

One thing I really like about Playa del Carmen is the sheer number of restaurants available. I went crazy every day I walked down Fifth Avenue. and I'll tell you a secret; I managed to try the food at practically all the restaurants (at least the best ones).

Walking through Quinta you will smell the fresh artisanal bread and on the menu you will find typical French products, such as croques monsieur, vol-au-vent, crepes, cheese boards, wines and coffee from the state of Chiapas.
It's worth it even if you just want to eat a little bread with butter, because it's really good!

This Italian restaurant is my favorite and reflects the Neapolitan influences in Playa Del Carmen. They’ve added an amazing secret garden with seating in the back, so if you don’t see people eating in the front, they might just be enjoying the more secluded and romantic garden area. This area is so nice that I had to add it to this Playa Del Carmen guide.
Recommended dishes: Pasta with pesto and seafood and authentic Neapolitan pizza.

Shopping in Playa del Carmen

Fifth Avenue, or “La Quinta” as it is affectionately known by locals, is the beating heart of Playa del Carmen when it comes to shopping. This pedestrian street stretches for about 5 km and is lined with shops, boutiques, art galleries and craft markets.
For lovers of international brands, Fifth Avenue has stores such as Zara, Pull & Bear, Sephora and H&M. However, the real charm lies in the local boutiques that offer artisanal products, from handmade jewelry to traditional ceramics and textiles.
Brazilians, in particular, love to buy quality tequilas, Mexican chocolates, cigars and, of course, the famous sombreros. In addition, it is common to find stores that sell agave-based products and Mayan-themed souvenirs.

Transportation in Playa del Carmen

Want to know how to get around the city? Playa del Carmen is charming and, For many tourists, walking is the best way to explore it. The famous 5th Avenue, for example, is an area where the flow of cars is prohibited, allowing pedestrians to walk freely and relaxed.
Do I need to rent a car in Playa del Carmen?
For longer distances, which are not as common in Playa, taxis are an option. However, if your goal is to explore other regions of the state or visit neighboring cities like Cancun, rent a car can be an excellent choice. It is worth noting that, for those who just want to enjoy the beauty of Playa del Carmen, renting a car can be an unnecessary expense.

The buses and vans are useful for those who want to visit areas outside of 5th Avenue or go to destinations such as Cancun or Tulum. These means of transport are economical alternatives for getting around. Remember to always have your Smartphone connected to the internet, because the Google Maps is indispensable to know when you will get off the Van, in case you are going to a cenote or beach outside of Playa del Carmen.
Pro Tip – Another tip is ADO Terminal, which is one of the main ways to travel to other parts of Mexico by bus. If the idea is to visit different Mexican cities, buses are a practical and affordable option.

if you like the most “bar” scheme Trujillos has the perfect atmosphere. The bar has a cozy decor in the middle of a small jungle and offers excellent drinks and a great variety of dishes.
I recommend you start with the best, ordering the 3 types of tequila (Blanco, Reposado and Anejo) to warm up the night.
Playa del Carmen Tips

If you are planning a trip to this Caribbean paradise, here are some essential tips to make the most of your stay:
- Currency in Mexico:
- The official currency is the Mexican peso, preferred for payments in Playa del Carmen.
- Although US dollars are accepted, change is given in pesos and the conversion rate may not be favorable.
- Exchange reais for dollars in Brazil and, in Mexico, look for exchange offices with good rates.
- ATMs are available and credit cards are accepted in most places.
- Avoid the exchange offices on Quinta Avenida. You will get a better exchange rate at Plaza Las Américas (Playa del Carmen's local shopping mall).
Weather in Playa del Carmen:
- Prepare for intense heat: drink water, wear light clothing and don't forget sunscreen.
- Choose accommodation with good air conditioning and, if possible, a swimming pool.
Driving in Mexico:
- An international driving license is not required, but be aware of traffic laws.
- Avoid fines for ignorance and beware of police officers asking for bribes. In case of problems, prefer to resolve them at the police station.
Electricity:
- Sockets have 2 flat pins and the voltage is usually 127V, 60Hz. An adapter may be required.

Sargassum in Playa del Carmen

Sargassum is a seaweed that has affected the beaches of Playa del Carmen and other regions of the Caribbean in recent years. This algae, when it accumulates on beaches, can cause environmental impacts and also affect tourism, as it alters the natural landscape and can emit an unpleasant odor as it decomposes.
The sargassum situation in Playa del Carmen varies throughout the year, and for those planning to visit the area and want to be up to date on the condition of the beaches.

Tours in Playa del Carmen
Chichén Itzá and the enchanting cenotes

A must-see if you go to Playa del Carmen is Chichén Itzá, Mexico's premier archaeological site and one of the 7 Modern Wonders of the World. This historic site is home to an impressive stone pyramid that serves as a solar calendar.
You can also marvel at an ancient Mayan “football field” where the winner was “sacrificed.” To cool off, the tour also includes a stop at nearby cenotes, such as Ik Kil, a natural freshwater pool located 50m below street level.
Chichén Itzá Tour Information
The Excursion to Chichén Itzá, Cobá and cenote Ik-Kil costs R$747,20 for adults and R$693,4 for children aged 3 to 10. In addition, you must pay the entrance fee to the archaeological site (Chichén Itzá: US$40 (R$201,90) adults, US$5 (R$25,20) children aged 3 to 10 and free for children under 3).
