Hidden Beach in Mexico: How to get to Islas Marietas

Where is the famous hidden beach in Mexico: Also known as “Playa del Amor”, it is located in the Islas Marietas National Park, in the state of Nayarit. It consists of two islands of volcanic origin, one called Isla Larga and the other Isla Redonda.

Playa Escondida in Mexico is located on Isla Redonda and has a paradisiacal atmosphere with very fine sand and crystal clear waters. The beach got its name because it can only be seen from above, only with aerial photography.

To visit this incredible place you must leave from Puerto Vallarta, Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerías, Punta Mita or La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. Most travelers prefer Puerto Vallarta as their starting point.

How to get to Playa Escondida in Mexico

The only way to get to Playa Escondida in Mexico is hiring a tour.

Only tour companies are authorized to run this tour. If you like to go on your own, be prepared to enjoy this experience with lots of people.

The trip to the Islas Marietas takes approximately 2 hours and the boats make several stops during the trip, one of them at Playa Escondida.

The tour also includes activities such as snorkeling, paddle boarding and kayaking. Most tours also offer food and an open bar (usually served during the return trip).

No boats of any kind are allowed to enter the small bay of Hidden Beach. Small boats get as close as possible and then everyone must swim through a tunnel to reach the beautiful beach.

Not all travelers are willing to take this route and are not obliged to do so.

On the other hand, it is not dangerous and the effort is well worth it. Even though it is a little difficult to get there, it is even harder to want to leave!

Best time to visit Playa Escondida in Mexico

The best time to visit this hidden beach in Mexico is from December 5th to March 23rd, as these are the months when humpback whales travel to this location. So, in addition to enjoying an incredible trip, you will also be able to see these giants in large numbers. Unforgettable!

The only thing you should take into account is that during this season the islands are very popular with national and foreign tourists. So plan your trip well!

What is the origin of the Marietas Islands?

Legend has it that the Islas Marietas were formed after military tests with explosives in the 20th century and although there is no proof, it is probably the only explanation for the origin of this beautiful beach.

Other tourist attractions in Islas Marietas

Although Playa Escondida is the main attraction in Islas Marietas, this archipelago has much more to offer.

The islands are home to a multitude of plants and animals, including the exotic Blue-footed Booby.

Without a doubt, one of the region's biggest attractions is the wealth of marine life that can be seen on the island's coral reefs. If you're lucky, you might also spot dolphins, turtles and much more.

100 people allowed per day

In recent years there has been considerable controversy over the large number of tourists visiting these islands. Official figures have put the number at 2.500 visitors per day.

For this reason, the Marietas Islands were temporarily closed to visitors in May 2016.

It was an attempt to prevent coral degradation and halt the physical deterioration of the island.

Studies have shown that the maximum number of visitors should be 625 per day, but in practice this number has quadrupled.

On social media, it was said that the government was putting the islands up for sale, but this was quickly denied and the islands were reopened in August 2016.

To compensate for the damage, the corals were replanted and the number of daily visitors was fixed at 100. In addition, scuba diving is not permitted at the site.

So if you want to visit Playa Escondida in Mexico, reserve your spot in advance and follow the instructions for environmental conservation.

Tips for visiting Hidden Beach

• Entrance to Hidden Beach is not usually included in the tour. Find out before you start your trip and bring enough cash for extra payments and tips.
• Be responsible and book your tour with authorized companies. Don’t believe in offers that are “too good to be true.”
• The maximum stay time at Praia Escondida is 30 minutes.
• Remember to bring biodegradable sunscreen, a towel and light clothing.
• It is not permitted to leave the boat with any utensils.
• It is not permitted to take any “souvenirs” such as sand, stones and plants.
• Bring a waterproof camera, as you will have to swim to the beach. If you want to take your phone, buy a waterproof case.
• It is not always possible to swim to Praia Escondida, if the tide is high access will be denied, check the sea conditions in advance.
• Camping is not allowed anywhere.

Where to stay in Islas Marietas

As I mentioned earlier, it is not possible to stay at the Marietas Islands, as visits are controlled. The Mexico Guide suggests that you look for hotels in Punta Mita, one of the most charming places in Riviera Nayarit.
