A wonderful restaurant option in downtown Cancun is El Pocito. With very affordable prices, the restaurant offers authentic Yucatecan cuisine, the kind tourists rarely find within the resorts. The restaurant is tucked away on the streets of downtown Cancun, but don't worry, it's very safe.
My suggestion is that you try queso relleno, which is a ball-shaped cheese stuffed with meat. It's a typical and unforgettable dish. Try it without fear and then tell me what you thought!

This restaurant is a true institution in Cancun. Although they have a branch in the Hotel Zone (La Habichuela Sunset), I still prefer the one downtown, with its illuminated Mayan garden at night. But you decide, the taste is the same.
La Habichuela Cancun has been around since the 70s and was one of the pioneering restaurants in the city. They know how to cook, they know how to present, and they know how to make you feel special—what more could you ask for? A fantastic menu based on Mexican and Caribbean cuisine, delicious cuts of meat, and excellent fish and seafood from the region.

Traditional Mexican food is the main attraction at Porfirio's. On its menu you can find everything from classic tacos in a gourmet version to delicious churros for dessert. La Parrilla is one of those places every Mexican recommends when a friend visits Cancun. Puerto Madero also specializes in Latin American and Italian cuisine. We suggest you try the seafood dish and the Argentine chorizo. For the record, Puerto Madero serves most of the food for the yachts in the area. It is definitely one of the best restaurants in the Cancun hotel zone.

This is the category that has grown the most in Cancun in recent years, and it's what visitors ask me about most these days. These are restaurants where dinner comes with a DJ, fire shows, acrobatics, and a party atmosphere that extends into the night. The three below consistently appear among the most booked in the city, so the golden rule is simple: book several days in advance.
Black Rose Cancun
Rosa Negra is Cancun's gastronomic phenomenon. The cuisine is high-level Latin American, with cuts of meat, seafood, and signature drinks, but what makes the restaurant famous is the experience: every night there's a percussion show with water, lights, and fire, and the atmosphere becomes a celebration complete with bottles containing sparklers flying through the room.
I usually warn people: it's not a quiet candlelit dinner, it's an event. For birthdays, farewell parties, and group celebrations, there's no better place in the city today. Go prepared with a strong stomach and wallet, and make a reservation in advance.

Chambao Cancun
From the same group as Rosa Negra, Chambao is the most spectacular steakhouse in the Hotel Zone, on the edge of the Nichupté Lagoon. The menu features premium cuts such as Kobe and Wagyu, some flambéed at the table, as well as fresh seafood. During dinner, there are fashion shows, live performances, and aerial acrobatics, in a luxurious bohemian setting that is beautiful at sunset.
This is my current suggestion for anyone who wants to combine top-quality meat with a memorable evening. Ask for a table near the lagoon at sunset.

Harry's Prime Steakhouse & Raw Bar
Harry's is the temple of meat in Cancun. The concept is different from its trendy neighbors: here the focus is on the exceptional quality of the cuts, such as Kobe, Black Onyx, and USDA Prime, prepared with very little seasoning to let the natural flavor of the meat shine. The raw seafood bar is also excellent.
The atmosphere is sophisticated and the service is impeccable, the kind that justifies the high bill. If your trip includes a special occasion night, this is where I would send you.

Restaurants in Cancun: Romantic
Thai
If you want to impress with a romantic dinner, Thai Lounge is one of my first suggestions. Located inside La Isla Shopping Mall, Thai offers an exotic atmosphere, as well as delicious Thai dishes that you can't miss.
But the best part is not yet. The restaurant has tables in beautiful private cabins overlooking the Nichupté Lagoon. It really is an unforgettable place!
The tip here is: book well in advance and be aware that you will only be able to stay a few hours in the cabin, as demand is so high that they had to limit the time.

Elephant
Elefanta is the sister restaurant of Thai and is located next to the Thai restaurant also on the edge of Nichupté Lagoon. The difference is that Elefanta serves delicious Indian food.
It features a perfectly tropical decor, with lush plants, beautiful woodwork, hut-style roofs, and colorful lighting, all combined to create a charming and mystical atmosphere.
Choose tables by the lagoon (all cozy, comfortable and romantic). Here you will have the opportunity to taste exotic dishes prepared in Tandoor ovens by authentic Indian chefs. The bar/lounge sessions are cool and come alive after 22pm with DJs on Friday and Saturday.

Mare by Cenacolo
In addition to being a romantic place, Mare is a great example of Italian cuisine. Its gastronomic offerings include dishes such as lobster risotto or the wonderful tuna tartare, among other specialties. They prepare their own pasta and are perhaps one of the best Italian restaurants in the Caribbean. If you are in Cancun, you definitely cannot miss it.

From Mexico Cancun
This is undoubtedly one of the best restaurants in Cancun, ideal for enjoying authentic French cuisine. It offers typical French dishes, including an extensive menu of fresh fish and seafood.
A place of privacy and sophistication, both in its dishes and its ambiance. It has a space divided into three parts: the main reception room, a small and reserved dining room, and a romantic garden to end the evening with a glass of champagne. Perfect for impressing!

Peter's Restaurant
The romantic Peter's is located in a small, cozy spot near the exit of Cancun's Hotel Zone. The personal attention of chef Peter himself and his wife Claudia Eder brings that welcoming atmosphere to the restaurant.
The menu features international cuisine (Mediterranean and American) and Mexican dishes, with interesting options that can be paired with a small but pleasant wine list. The prices are quite reasonable, although not cheap. But since you're on vacation, it's worth it!

Limoncello Cancun
If you love Italian food and are looking for a romantic dinner in Cancun, Trattoria Limoncello is another great option. It has a beautiful terrace and a large dining room overlooking the Nichupté Lagoon. It serves delicious traditional Italian dishes and a wide variety of wines.
Its menus excellently combine the refined and the casual, in a spacious space, with traditional Italian music and large windows to enjoy the sunset.

Bubba Gump Cancun
Run, Forrest, run! The food isn't excellent (which doesn't mean it's not good) compared to other restaurants in Cancun's Hotel Zone, but it's really fun to have lunch or dinner at Bubba Gump. The Forrest Gump-themed decor and the restaurant's location on the edge of Nichupté Lagoon make it a perfect setting for a lively afternoon or evening. The restaurant also has a Kids Club, making it one of the most practical options for families with children in the Hotel Zone.
If you're a fan of the movie, you'll also love the restaurant. What to eat at Bubba Gump? Obviously, what Bubba specialized in: shrimp! I really enjoyed it.
Tip – The Run Forrest and Stop Forrest signs are for calling the waiter. If you leave it on the red (Stop) sign, he will come to serve you.

Cheap restaurants in Cancun
The grandparent's house
If you don’t want to spend a lot and still want to try quality Mexican food, La Casa de los Abuelos is a great alternative. Whether it’s breakfast or lunch, you’ll find a good variety. The restaurant offers steaks, fajitas, tacos and much more. It’s worth it!

Los de Pescado offers fish or shrimp tacos, Baja California style. They're actually quite tasty and inexpensive, perfect for those strolling through downtown Cancun and looking to save money. Try them with the delicious sauces they offer.

Ty-Coz Express
Ty-Coz Express offers delicious baguettes at great prices. It’s a great option for a quick snack or even to take to eat at a beach or cenote. Best of all, you’ll find a branch in the hotel zone.

Taqueria Loteria
Taqueria Loteria is a local favorite. The place is simple, but offers a good variety of tacos and quesadillas. Don’t forget to try the tacos al pastor. This is your chance to try authentic Mexican tacos. They’re so good!
Address – Calle 53 Nte. 6, 62 – Near the exit of the hotel zone. It is at the intersection of Chichén Itzá and Palenque avenues.
Bait Lajam Arabic Tacos
Tacos Árabes are common in many cities in Mexico, but there is nothing Arab about them. They are burritos stuffed with meat or chicken, lettuce, and cheese, and they are delicious. Just one is enough to satisfy even the biggest eater. We suggest you try the tamarind sauce with your taco. It's big and cheap!

Chedraui Select
The Chedraui supermarket in the hotel zone has Chedraui Selecto, a restaurant that offers a good variety of food at good prices. The food isn't excellent, but the value for money is worthwhile. You can also take advantage of the opportunity to do some shopping. Beer is much cheaper than in other places. Chedraui Selecto is very close to the nightclubs and Plaza Forum.

Tip from someone who lives here: to experience real street food, head to Parque de las Palapas in the city center at night, where stalls serve Mexican snacks like marquesitas, elotes, and salbutes at local prices. It's the most authentic and affordable thing to do in the city.
Brazilian restaurants in Cancun
Bovino's
If you can't stay away from a good barbecue even when you're in another country, Bovino's will save your life. This Brazilian restaurant offers high-quality meat in the traditional rodizio style and has a cold cuts bar with delicious options.
Some say that eating at Brazilian steakhouses in Mexico is better than in Brazil because of the quality of the meat.

Brazilian Steakhouse
Churrascaria Brasileirão offers a simpler service compared to Bovino's. The cold cuts selection is smaller and the variety of meats leaves something to be desired. On the other hand, it boasts good quality and is much cheaper than the competition. You can go without fear!

Practical tips for eating well in Cancun
After 15 years of frequenting these places, these are the rules I give to everyone who asks me for restaurant recommendations in Cancun:
- Book in advance at the trendy spots: Rosa Negra, Chambao, Harry's, and Thai Lounge are practically packed every night. Book several days in advance, especially during peak season, and most accept online reservations.
- Tipping is customary. In Mexico, a 10% to 15% tip is expected in restaurants with table service. Check beforehand to see if it's already included in the bill as "servicio" or "propina incluida".
- Pay in pesos: Many restaurants accept dollars, but the exchange rate applied is almost always unfavorable. Paying in pesos or by card without conversion is cheaper.
- The city center is cheaper than the Hotel Zone: The same type of food usually costs significantly less on Yaxchilán and Bonampak avenues than on Boulevard Kukulcán.
- Sunset is at the lagoon: The restaurants with the most beautiful sunset views are those overlooking Nichupté Lagoon (Lorenzillo's, Chambao, Porfirio's, Thai). Make a reservation for late afternoon and ask for an outdoor table.
- Be careful with the chili peppers: What Mexicans call "mildly spicy" might be too much for the Brazilian palate. Always ask and request the sauces on the side.
