Why go to Punta Cana

Why go to Punta Cana

I was already very used to it Cancun and due to the visa problems that many Brazilians are facing, I decided to go to Punta Cana as it was a destination that promised a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.

There, I found white sand beaches and crystal clear waters that were the ideal setting to relax and forget about the world. In addition, activities such as snorkeling in the coral reefs, catamaran tours and the vibrant culture of the Dominican Republic made my trip exciting and culturally enriching.

Rafael Couto
Punta Cana offered me exactly the balance between tranquility and fun that I was looking for on my vacation. The destination is quieter than Cancun, but the wonderful beaches and serenity of the place make it a must-visit.

Brazilian Do you need a yellow fever vaccine to travel to Punta Cana?. It is recommended that the vaccine be taken at least 10 days before traveling to ensure its effectiveness. In addition, it is important to carry the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) with you, which proves vaccination.

This requirement is part of public health measures to prevent the spread of yellow fever, a mosquito-borne disease that is present in some regions of Brazil. Therefore, to avoid any inconvenience when entering the country, Brazilian travelers should make sure they are up to date with this vaccination.

Punta Cana Airport

Punta Cana Airport

Punta Cana International Airport is the main entry point for Brazilian tourists visiting the region. This airport is known for its distinctive architecture, with thatched roofs that reflect the local charm. It is a modern and well-equipped airport, offering a variety of services, including duty-free shopping, restaurants and transportation options.

Migration at Punta Cana airport

Brazilian travelers should be aware that upon arrival, they will go through immigration and customs procedures. It is important to have documents such as a passport and the International Certificate of Vaccination against yellow fever on hand. In addition, it is necessary to pay a fee for the tourist card, unless it has already been purchased online before traveling.

The airport is also relatively small and easy to navigate, making arrival and departure a breeze. For transportation to your hotel or resort, there are taxi and shuttle services available, which can be booked in advance or arranged on site.

Punta Cana is expensive

Punta Cana is a destination that can vary in terms of cost, depending on the travel style and choices of the tourist. For those seeking luxury, the region offers a range of all-inclusive resorts and exclusive activities, which can result in a higher cost.

However, there are also more affordable accommodation and food options, especially outside of the larger resorts. Leisure activities such as excursions and water sports also have a wide price range.

Rafael Couto
While Punta Cana can be an expensive destination for those seeking high-end experiences, it also offers more affordable options that suit a variety of budgets. The key is to plan and research in advance to find the best options that fit your budget.

Weather in Punta Cana

Punta Cana has a tropical climate with pleasant temperatures all year round. The average temperature ranges between 25°C and 30°C, creating an ideal environment for enjoying the beaches and outdoor activities.

The climate is divided into two main seasons: the dry season, from December to April, when the climate is milder and rainfall is less frequent, and the rainy season, from May to November, characterized by more intense and sporadic rainfall, mainly in the late afternoon.

Rafael Couto
Although there is rain at this time of year, it is usually brief and does not prevent you from enjoying tourist activities. It is also important to be aware of the hurricane season in the Caribbean, which runs from June to November, although direct impact on this destination is rare.

Punta Cana Time Zone

Punta Cana is located in the GMT-4 time zone, known as Atlantic Standard Time. In Brazil, the time zone varies between GMT-2 and GMT-5, depending on the region. For most of Brazil, which follows Brasília time (GMT-3), Punta Cana is one hour behind.

However, it is important to note that Brazil observes daylight saving time in some regions, which may temporarily alter this difference. During Brazilian daylight saving time, the difference may increase to two hours less in the Dominican Republic.

Rafael Couto
On the other hand, the Dominican Republic does not observe daylight saving time, so the time difference remains constant throughout the year. Therefore, Brazilian travelers should be aware of these variations when planning their trips to Punta Cana.

Punta Cana Currency

The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (DOP). However, the US Dollar (USD) is also widely accepted in many establishments, especially in tourist areas and resorts.

This may be convenient for tourists, but it is always a good idea to have some Dominican Pesos on hand for small expenses such as tips and shopping at local markets, where the dollar may not be as readily accepted or the exchange rate may be less favorable. ATMs are available for withdrawals in Dominican Pesos, and many places accept credit cards.

Rafael Couto
It is always wise to check exchange rates and bank fees for international transactions before traveling. The conversion of local currency to Brazilian real varies according to the financial market, so it is advisable to check the current exchange rate before traveling.

How to get around Punta Cana

  • On foot: The best way to get around is on foot, especially if you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort and don’t plan on walking too far. Most resorts are located on the beach or secluded enough that you won’t have to travel far to relax. To get outside of the resort, it’s a good idea to call a taxi through the concierge. You can also rent a car if you’re willing.
  • By car: Renting a car is advisable for exploring the surrounding cities, and can be done at the hotel or at the airport. However, driving within the city is not recommended due to heavy traffic and the local driving style, which often ignores speed limits and traffic signs. Keep in mind that some resorts may charge a parking fee, but an additional driving “permit” is not required.
  • Gua Gua “Bus”: Taking local buses is one of the cheapest ways to get around, but it's not ideal if you're in a hurry. The schedules are irregular and the stops are not well marked. The buses are often crowded.
  • Taxi: Taxis are plentiful and fares are negotiable, but they can be expensive. It is advisable to agree on a price before getting into the taxi. Ordering a taxi through the hotel can be more expensive, so trying to hail a taxi outside the hotel may result in lower fares.
  • Motoconchos: These motorcycle taxis offer cheap fares, starting from around $3. They are a great option for those seeking an adrenaline rush, but it is important to be aware of the risks, given the high accident rate.

Flight to Punta Cana

The cost of a flight from São Paulo to the Dominican Republic can vary significantly depending on several factors, such as the time of year, how far in advance you purchase your flight, the airline you choose, and whether the flight is direct or has stops.

In general, prices can start around R$2.000 to R$3.000 for flights with stopovers, while direct flights can be more expensive. During peak tourist season, which includes holidays and vacation months, prices tend to be higher.

Rafael Couto
To get the best price, it is recommended to research and compare prices in advance, as well as considering flexibility in travel dates. It is also important to keep an eye out for promotions and special offers from airlines.
