What is it:
- Largest island in Mexico (48×16 km)
- 2nd largest coral reef in the world
- Less sargassum than ANYwhere else in the Riviera Maya
- Turquoise cinema sea
Worth it?
✅ YES for: snorkeling, diving, beach clubs, paradisiacal beaches
✅ YES if there is sargassum in Playa/Tulum (Cozumel stays clean!)
❌ NO for: those who want to do everything on foot, lively nightlife
How many days:
- 1 day = enough (round trip)
- 3 days = ideal
- 5 days = for divers
Best time:
Nov-Apr (zero sargassum, perfect weather)
Average cost/day:
- Economic: R$ 300-400
- Comfortable: R$800-1.200
- Luxury: R$ 2.000+
Top 3 Must-Sees:
- Snorkeling in El Cielo (starfish)
- Buccano's Beach Club (the most beautiful)
- Playa Mia (water park at sea)
Avoid:
- Eastern beaches in May-October (sargassum)
- Dolphin parks (animal cruelty)
- Buying tours on the street (common scams)
- Taxis (absurdly expensive)
What NOBODY Tells You About Cozumel (Read Before You Plan!)
I've worked in tourism in the Riviera Maya for years. I see the same mistakes EVERY DAY. I'll tell you the truths that agencies hide:
“Can I Walk Everything in Cozumel?” – NO!
The #1 mistake 90% of tourists make: They arrive thinking that Cozumel is like Isla Mujeres (small, walkable).
THE BRUTAL REALITY:
- Cozumel: 48 km north-south × 16 km east-west
- From the center to the best beaches: 5-28 km
- On foot you get STUCK in the city center (boring!)
Actual distances:
- Downtown → Buccano's Beach Club: 6 km (1h30 on foot)
- Center → Playa Mia: 15 km (impossible on foot)
- Center → Punta Sur: 28 km (40 min by car)
- Center → El Cielo: Only by boat!
You NEED transportation:
| Option |
Price/day |
Pros |
Cons |
| Scooter |
MX$ 500 (~R$ 150) |
Economical, fun |
Strong sun, dangerous if you don't have experience. |
| Car |
MX$ 800-1.200 (~R$ 240-360) |
Comfortable, air-conditioned |
More expensive, paid parking. |
| Tour |
MX$ 1.500-2.500 (~R$ 450-750) |
All inclusive, guide |
Less freedom |
| Taxi |
MX$ 400-1.200/segment |
Door to door |
ABSURDLY EXPENSIVE |
Mistake I made: My first time in Cozumel I didn't have a car. I spent MX$ 2.400 (R$ 720) on taxis in 2 days! If I had rented a scooter: MX$ 1.000 (R$ 300). Learn from my mistake!
My recommendation:
- 1-day round trip: Book a tour (includes transportation)
- 2-3 days on the island: Rent a scooter (if you have experience) OR a car
- Never: Taxi (airport/ferry → hotel only)
What is the best time to visit Cozumel?
The best time to visit Cozumel is from November to April, with perfect weather (25-28°C), little rain, no sargassum seaweed, and excellent underwater visibility for diving.
I have GOOD news and COMPLETE news about sargassum:
Good news: Cozumel is the LEAST island affected by sargassum in the entire Riviera Maya!
Full news: It depends on WHICH side you go.
Why Does Cozumel Have Less Sargassum?
The ocean current comes from the south and pushes the sargassum toward the east side of the island. The west and north sides remain protected.
Result:
- When Playa del Carmen is BROWN of algae
- When Tulum is HORRIBLE
- Cozumel West continues LINDA!

Beaches ALWAYS clean (even in the worst season):
✅ Buccano's Beach Club
✅ Island Beach Club
✅ Money Bar
✅ Playa Mia
✅ Palancar
✅ San Francisco
Problematic beaches (May-Oct):
❌ Chen Rio
❌ San Martín
❌ Punta Morena
❌ Entire East Coast
Smart strategy: Even in August (the worst time), the beaches in the North/West are beautiful. So Cozumel is ALWAYS worth it!
How to Monitor Sargassum in Real Time
1. Red Sargasso (Facebook)
- DAILY update with real photos
- Traffic light: 🟢 Green | 🟡 Yellow | 🔴 Red
2. Hotel WhatsApp
- Send message 2-3 days in advance
- Ask for a CURRENT photo of the beach
- Ask: “¿Hay sargazo today?”
3. Live Webcams
- Some beach clubs have an online camera
- Google: “cozumel beach webcam”
Personal experience: I went in August 2024 (worst time). The East Coast was BROWN and impassable. The West Coast (Buccano's) was PERFECT, with crystal clear water. I only stayed on the West Coast and it was amazing!

Prepare your wallet because you WILL pay the minimum consumption.
What is Minimum Consumption?
You pay MX$X to enter. This amount can be spent on food and drinks. If you don't spend it, you lose.
Example:
- Consumption: MX$ 500 (~R$ 150)
- You order: 2 beers (MX$ 100) + lunch (MX$ 300) = MX$ 400
- Missing: MX$ 100 (order dessert or more beer)

✅ Wi-Fi (mostly)
What is NOT included:
❌ Food (paid separately, bill upon consumption)
❌ Drink (paid separately, bill upon consumption)
❌ Beach umbrella (some charge MX$50-100 extra)
Is It Worth Paying?
YES, VERY! Because:
- You would spend that on beer/lunch anyway
- Structure is EXCELLENT (clean, organized, safe)
- Lifeguard, clean bathroom, fresh water shower
- White sand and crystal clear sea
- There's no way around it: public beaches are bad
Comparison: I tried to find a free public beach. I found one: dirty, unstructured, and uncomfortable. I ran back to the beach club.
How to Save Money in Cozumel
Tip #1: Go in 2-4 people
- Consumption MX$ 500 ÷ 4 people = MX$ 125 each (~R$ 37)
- Order food to share
Tip #2: Arrive early (9-10am)
- Enjoy the WHOLE day
- Best value for money
Tip #3: Ask BEFORE you sit down
- “What is the minimum consumption?”
- Confirm the value
- Some don't give notice and charge a surprise fee!

When to Use a Taxi (Only These Situations)
- ✅ Porto → Hotel (arrival with suitcases)
- ✅ Hotel → Porto (departure with suitcases)
- ✅ Emergency (sick, heavy rain)
- ❌ NEVER use a taxi for walks/beaches
Smart decision: Pay MX$300 for a taxi to the hotel. Rent a scooter at the hotel. Explore the island. On the last day, take a taxi back to the port. Saves R$500+.
Tourist Trap: Parks with Animal Exploitation
AVOID AT ALL COSTS:
❌ Chankanaab Park
❌ Punta Sur Park
❌ Delphinus (multiple points)
Why Avoid (Chankanaab, Delphinus):
- Dolphins in TINY pools
- “Swimming with dolphins” = torture for the animal
- Dolphins live depressed, die young
- Extreme stress to “entertain” tourists
What they hide:
- Dolphins in captivity live 50% less
- They develop aggressive behavior
- Suicide attempts (stop breathing)
- Totally inadequate environment
Why avoid (Punta Sur):
- Same business group as Chankanaab
- Finances animal exploitation
- Despite the beautiful lighthouse, it is NOT worth it
✅ ETHICAL Alternatives
Want to see marine life?
- Snorkeling in El Cielo – FREE fish, rays, starfish
- Reef diving – Turtles, nurse sharks in their natural habitat
- Boat tour – Sometimes you see dolphins FREE in the sea
- Natural aquarium – Reefs are the largest aquarium in the world
Why it matters: When you pay these parks, you fund: the capture of wild dolphins, the separation of calves from their mothers, confinement in tiny spaces, and forced training with food deprivation. There are better ways to see marine animals.
Other Common Pitfalls in Cozumel
❌ Buy Street Tours
The problem:
- Unlicensed “ghost” agencies
- Untrained guides
- Cases of sexual harassment (real stories)
- No refund if something goes wrong
- “Cheap” prices with hidden fees
What to do:
- ✅ Book online: Civitatis
- ✅ Read reviews first (minimum 50+ reviews)
- ✅ Always ask for a written contract
- ✅ Check if the company is licensed
⚠️ Real reader's story: Booked a street tour in Playa. The boat captain harassed her all day. The guide did nothing. There was no way to complain (no receipt, no company name). Don't be another victim!
❌ Go to the Eastern Beaches during Sargassum Season
Affected beaches (May-Oct):
- Chen Rio
- San Martín
- Brown Tip
- Mezcalitos
What you will find:
- BROWN sea of algae
- Bad smell
- Impossible to swim
- Lost time
Solution:
- Go North/West (always clean!)
Rent a Scooter in Cozumel Without Experience
SERIOUS Problem:
- Accidents are VERY common
- Bumpy roads
- Sand on the track (slippery)
- Local drivers drive fast
- Strong sun + dehydration = danger
If you have never ridden a motorcycle:
- ❌ DO NOT start in Cozumel!
Alternatives:
- ✅ Rent a car (safer)
- ✅ Book tours (transportation included)
- ✅ Taxi only for necessary journeys
Report: Cozumel Hospital treats 5-10 tourists per week with scooter accidents. Fractures, deep cuts, trauma. Don't become a statistic!
If you are going to rent a scooter:
- Have previous experience with motorcycles
- ALWAYS wear a helmet
- Drive slowly (max 40 km/h)
- Stop getting tired/dehydrated
- Avoid 12pm-15pm (strong sun)
- Mandatory full insurance

Cozumel Map

With this map of Cozumel you can get an idea of how to get around the island. Renting a scooter is highly recommended and is very affordable.
When to go to Cozumel

A The best time to visit Cozumel is between November and February. When the weather is perfect for enjoying the beaches and diving. Temperatures are pleasant (25-28°C), there is little rain, and underwater visibility is excellent.
From March to June, temperatures begin to rise and there are occasional rain showers in the late afternoon. It's considered low season, so you'll find great deals on hotels and tours.
From July to October is the rainiest period and hurricane season, with the highest risk between August and September. If you decide to travel during this time, pay close attention to the weather forecast. On the other hand, prices are the lowest of the year.
💡 Best for diving: November to March is ideal for spotting bull sharks. May to September has warmer waters and fewer tourists at the dive sites.
How many days to stay in Cozumel

Ideally, you should spend 3-4 days in Cozumel to see the main attractions. For a day trip, 1 day is enough. Divers can enjoy 5-7 days.
Cozumel is an incredible destination with a great history, but it is also a bit expensive. If you travel to Cancun or the Riviera Maya, I recommend you spend at least 2 days visiting some of its main attractions, such as Punta Sur or Isla de la Pasión.
However, if you have more time available, I consider that 4 days is enough time to appreciate the beauty of this place and visit most of the tourist attractions that the island has to offer.
Of course, if you have the opportunity to stay longer, even better! There are so many attractions in Cozumel that you won't want to leave.
How to get to Cozumel

Ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel (Most Common)
Take the ferry from Playa del Carmen (45 min, R$ 90 one way). From Cancun, take the ADO bus to Playa (1h20, R$ 40) and then the ferry. Ferries depart every hour from 7 am to 23 pm.
The best option to get to Cozumel is using the ferry that leaves from the port of Playa del Carmen.
At the port, you will have three ferry options, so I leave the information for you to compare the rates and schedules. It is important to note that there is no savings when purchasing the single or full ticket, so if you are not sure of the return date, I recommend that you select the single trip.
Overseas: Hours: 7 AM to 23 PM
Mexico WaterJets: Hours: 9 AM to 19 PM
Caribbean Boats: Hours: 6:45 AM to 11:00 PM
Price: Approximately R$90 per person (one way). Ferries depart every hour.

How to get from Cancun to Cozumel

If you are vacationing in Cancun and decide to visit Cozumel you will have to go to Playa del Carmen first and then go to the port and take the ferry to Cozumel. Then here I show you the different options to get there:
Take an ADO bus from downtown Cancun.
- Departures every 20 minutes
- Duration: 1h20
- Price: Approximately R$ 40
- First bus: 5:30 AM | Last: 23:40 PM
In addition, My recommendation is not to leave the trip for the night and also, choose a reasonable time in relation to the ferry departure, remember that you are traveling over land and may have problems.
Travel tip:
You must make sure that the bus goes to the tourist terminal, as Playa del Carmen has two bus stations.
From Van Coletiva in downtown Cancun
- Departures every 30 minutes
- Duration: 1h30-1h40 (slower than the bus)
- Price: Approximately R$ 8
- Warning: Limited space for luggage.

- Direct ADO bus to Playa del Carmen
- Departures every 30 minutes (8:30 AM to 00:30 AM)
- Price: Approximately R$ 36
Mexico Guide Tip: I do not recommend using a regular taxi to go to Playa del Carmen, as you will pay dearly and it is not necessary, as there are many options to get there. If you want comfort, hire a transfer.
How to get to Cozumel by car
To take your car to Cozumel, use the ferry that leaves from the Calica Punta Venados terminal (9km from Playa del Carmen).
Business: UltraCharge e TransCaribe
Price: Approximately R$ 300 per vehicle (one way)
Frequency: 2-3 trips per day
Duration: 1 hour
💡 Worth it? This is only necessary if you're staying for many days and want to explore the ENTIRE island freely. For 2-3 days, it's more practical to rent a scooter or car in Cozumel.
Mexico Guide Tip: Remember that you have to arrive 1 to XNUMX hours before the scheduled time to be able to board the Ferry without any problems and don't leave it to the last minute to buy your ticket as you may run out of space.
Documents Needed to Travel to Cozumel

Passport: Required, with a minimum validity of 6 months.
Mexican Visa: Mandatory for Brazilians since August 2022. Schedule an interview at the nearest Mexican consulate. The government has promised to reinstate the electronic visa, but there is still no set date.
Vouchers: Have a copy of your hotel reservation and return ticket (they may be requested by immigration).
Travel insurance: It is not mandatory, But it is highly recommended. Medical care in Mexico is expensive, and tourists do not have access to the public health system.
Vaccines: No specific vaccine is required.
Tips for renting a car in Cozumel

Although many of the island’s attractions are located near the city center and can be reached on foot, you will need some form of transportation to visit the island’s coolest spots. Here I will summarize the options so you can choose the one that best suits your budget:
Taxis
Taxis on the island are extremely expensive, costing over 120 reais per ride, so I recommend using them only if absolutely necessary, since for the price of one ride, you can rent a car for the whole day. In short, this is the worst option in Cozumel.
Rent a car
With this option, you can move around the island without any problems and visit many places, such as San Miguel de Cozumel. It is the most practical option, as you can rent a vehicle for between 95 and 150 reais, always remembering that you will have to pay for parking in many places.
If you are staying at a hotel in Cozumel, make sure it offers parking, otherwise this option will not be very beneficial.
Rent a Scooter
This is my favorite option. If you are going to spend the day in Cozumel or are staying on the island, the scooter is not only fun, it is also very cheap and you can travel around the entire island without any problems. The daily cost of the scooter is around 94 reais.
Public transportation in Cozumel
Cozumel has 8 routes covered by public transport, a very good option, especially since February 2017 there is a mobile application (Uniper Cozumel) with which you can know where the transport is going and make the most of your time. For less than 4 reais you can approach these units.
The 8 routes cover the island in its entirety, so this is an excellent option if you are on a tight budget. You should know that there are not many vans in Cozumel, so patience is very important as it may take a while to get to the stop you want.
Bicycle rental
For the more athletic, there is also this possibility, it is quite common to travel by bike on the island and in the center of Cozumel you will find several companies that offer the rental service. You can also do an incredible Cozumel Bike Tour. Don't miss it, it's really cool!
There are usually three options: the first is for a few hours and the price is normally 36 reais, the second option is for the whole day, you will pay approximately 60 reais and finally, you will have the opportunity to rent it for several days and you will get a discount, you will pay 36 reais per day, more or less.
One thing is for sure, since there are many rental places nearby, check the prices, don't hire the service at the first place. Also, try to negotiate a discount, I guarantee you will get a better rate to enjoy Cozumel by bike.
Now that you know how to get to Cozumel and how to get around the island, the best part is here: what to do and where to go in Cozumel.
What to do in Cozumel

Discover the beautiful beaches of Cozumel
The beaches of Cozumel are undoubtedly one of the main reasons why many tourists choose to visit this destination. The first thing you should know is that Cozumel is a fairly large island (unlike Isla Mujeres, for example), then the number of beaches to visit is extensive.
Next, I will give you some suggestions that I consider essential during your trip to Cozumel:
San Francisco Beach

It is one of the most beautiful beaches on Cozumel Island in Mexico. Its crystal clear, calm and warm waters are perfect for swimming and relaxing.
San Francisco is a beach with very soft white sand and a very popular activity is to take a trip on one of the glass-bottomed catamarans, to see the colorful seabed and the thousands of species of fish that inhabit the island without getting wet.
Enchanted Beach

If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle, Playa Encantada is the best option. This quiet beach is bathed by turquoise waters and will be a good place to relax and unwind.
Passion Island

As its name suggests, this place, full of mangroves and spectacular reefs, is the most romantic you will find in Cozumel, being one of the most visited destinations by couples and newlyweds.
To get to this small island, just one kilometer long, you must book a tour.
Palancar Beach

This is one of the most natural and untouched beaches in Cozumel. It has crystal clear waters and is home to two of the island's most important reefs (Colombia and Palancar). This beach is a favorite among tourists, with numerous services and places to eat and cool off.
Mexico Guide Tip: When visiting the beaches of Cozumel be careful with your belongings (cell phones, bags, sunglasses). Since this is a place visited by thousands of tourists from all over the world, there are always pickpockets taking advantage of the situation. If you are careful, you won't get into trouble.
Playa San Juan

For those traveling with children, this is the ideal place, as the calm waters of this beach will guarantee a day of relaxation and pleasure. In addition, at Playa San Juan you can go horse riding.
Santa Maria Beach

It is a wide beach protected by palm trees. It is perfect for reading a good book, enjoying a sunbath and connecting with the sound of the sea. So, if you are looking for a place full of peace and privacy, this beautiful beach is your place.
Hernan Beach

Protected by the Cozumel Castle and with a unique landscape, this place is the perfect destination for photo lovers, being, without a doubt, the most beautiful beach in Cozumel.
Travel tip:
There are also private beach clubs that offer a variety of services and can be a good option if you are traveling with children. Here are two excellent ones I suggest:
- Playa Mia Grand Beach Park
- Mr. Sanchos Beach Club
Most popular tours in Cozumel
Snorkeling and diving in Cozumel

Another of the main attractions of Cozumel Island in Mexico is its marine life and the important reefs that surround it. For this reason, it is a favorite destination for divers and nature lovers.
In Cozumel, you will have the opportunity to become certified in diving if you want to do this activity or snorkeling to see the spectacular marine fauna and corals that are beneath its waters.
Explore the Sanctuary of the Goddess Ixchel

This place is also known as the Ruins of San Gervasio. In this impressive archaeological site, you can visit the sanctuary of Ixchel, the goddess of fertility worshipped by the Mayan civilization, who believed that a marriage in her presence would last a lifetime.
History of Cocoa at The Mayan Cacao Company

Here you will learn the history of cocoa, a fruit discovered and admired by the Mayans and an important part of Mexico. Here you will be able to witness the preparation of chocolate and then taste impressive combinations of flavors.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to see a typical local house and its customs, as well as visit a small museum that will tell the story with objects from the period.
This place surrounded by cocoa plants is perfect for the whole family and you won't be able to leave without buying the unique chocolate blends they offer.
Cozumel Island Museum

San Gervasio Park Archaeological Site

San Gervasio Park is the most important archaeological site in Cozumel and was a ceremonial center dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of the moon, fertility and birth.
Located in the interior of the island, San Gervasio is a testament to the rich Mayan history and culture. The site houses several stone structures, including temples, squares and roads, which reflect the architecture and way of life of the Mayans.
In addition to its historical importance, the park is surrounded by lush vegetation, making it a peaceful place for contemplation and connection with nature.
Beach Parks in Cozumel
Discover Punta Sur Eco Beach Park

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park in Cozumel is one of the island’s natural gems, offering visitors a unique combination of natural beauty, adventure, and relaxation. Here’s a quick review of this enchanting destination:
- Natural Beauty and Biodiversity: Punta Sur Park is a vast ecological reserve that is home to a variety of habitats, from mangroves and lagoons to coral reefs.
- Adventure and Activities: In addition to relaxing on the beach, visitors can indulge in a variety of adventure activities. There are hiking and biking trails, kayaking through the mangroves, and snorkeling and diving opportunities on the reefs.
