Cenote Dos Ojos is one of the most wonderful hidden treasures in the Tulum region. A visit to a unique underground world will become an unforgettable experience.
Visiting Playa del Carmen and not bathing in the fresh, crystal-clear waters of a cenote could be considered an incomplete trip.
There are open and closed cenotes; Cenote Dos Ojos is a flooded cave system that has both. In the semi-open part, a surprising play of light and color is created inside.

Where is Cenote Dos Ojos?

The Dos Ojos cenote is located on the road between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, in the Dos Ojos National Park, which also houses the Jaguar Cenote, Nicte Ha Cenote, El Pit Cenote, and Los Monos Cenote.
I really like the Nicte-Ha cenote because it's not very touristy and it's quite wild. But they're all different, it depends on what you like!
Dos Ojos Park is also very close to Xel-Há Park (5 minutes by car) and the beautiful white sand beaches of Xcacel and Chemuyil (10 minutes away on Carretera 307).
If you are going to Dos Ojos by public transport, be aware that the cenote is 2.5 km from the road. Rent a bike, as walking can be a difficult journey due to the heat.
How to get to Dos Ojos cenote

Going on your own:
By car: it's 20 minutes from Tulum and 40 minutes from Playa del Carmen on Federal Highway 307. Parking is free.
By public transport: there are many buses between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Don't forget to ask the driver to stop at Parque Dos Ojos.
Is it worth going to Cenote Dos Ojos?
Yes. It's one of the most touristy cenotes on the Riviera Maya, but I still believe it's a must-see in Tulum because it's truly impressive. Especially if you enjoy snorkeling!
Plus, since it’s in the same park as the other cenotes I mentioned, you can enjoy several cenotes without having to travel.
What is the price of Cenote Dos Ojos?

Entrance to Cenote dos Ojos costs 350 pesos and includes a life jacket, or 600 pesos if you take the snorkeling tour (which gives access to Baticueva).
Cenote Dos Ojos with children: is it a good idea?
Cenote Dos Ojos Leste is perfect for families with children because it has all the necessary facilities: changing rooms, lockers (for rent), showers, and toilets.
There's even a restaurant and picnic area if you prefer to bring your own food.
What to see and do at Cenote Dos Ojos
It is called “Dos Ojos” because it is made up of two cenotes connected by a 400-meter underwater corridor.
It is part of the largest flooded cave in the world (347 km!): Sac Actun.
With its translucent water and many corners to explore, it is the ideal place for snorkeling and cave diving in Yucatan.
In the semi-open part of the cenote, the light and colors are really beautiful (it looks like photoshop).
There are two diving routes in Cenote Dos Ojos: Barbie (515 m) and Cueva del Murciélago (312 m).
Barbie: lots of stalactites and stalagmites, fossils, beautiful with its play of light and quite accessible, as it has a maximum depth of 6,5 m without current (no advanced diver required).
Baticueva: also called the Bat Cave, it is a shorter but darker route, with almost no natural light, narrow passages, fossils, and stalactites. There is sediment, so good buoyancy control is important.
Map of Cenote Dos Ojos

From Ojo Oeste, you can take two paths:
The first leads to the second largest cenote, Ojo Leste, which you must enter through a narrow space in the cavern underwater.
The second trail leads to the dark bat cave. Both paths are ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving.
Only certified divers are allowed to dive. There are no guides available. You will need to bring your own equipment, however, there is a dive shop at the entrance with everything you need.
The water temperature varies depending on the season, and we don't know the maximum depth of the cenotes, but if you know, please share it with us!
If you are going to dive, follow the routes with the ropes, as cave diving can be very dangerous. Always be very careful!
What is the best time to go to Cenote Dos Ojos?

Being one of the most famous cenotes in Yucatan, it can quickly fill up with tourists.
I recommend going early, around 8am, when it opens, because people arrive around 9:30-10am.
Another option is to go around 15:30-16pm, when the groups have already left.
What to bring to Cenote Dos Ojos
- Cash (cards are not accepted)
- A towel
- Your snorkeling equipment (you can also rent it at the cenote, but if you can bring your own, that’s even better!)
- Biodegradable repellent and sunscreen only
- Aquatic shoes, as they are very practical in cenotes.
