What to do in Los Cabos: 16 unmissable experiences I had.
#1 The Arches

The Los Arcos postcard image has become the most well-known representation of Cabo San Lucas nationally and internationally. It is a rock formation that emerges from the sea at the end of the Baja California Sur peninsula, which they call "the end of the land".
Just 100 meters from Los Arcos are Playa del Amor and Playa del Divórcio. The most interesting thing here is that you can swim in the Pacific Ocean and then in the Sea of Cortez just a few meters apart — normally the boats that offer tours They'll drop you off at Playa del Amor and you choose the time they pick you up.
Colonies of friendly sea lions can be seen near the beach. A tip from someone who has done this tour several times: Ask the boatman to let you spend more time at Playa del Amor than the standard itinerary allows. It's worth sitting on the sand and watching the sea lions resting on the rocks—it's one of the most authentic moments Los Cabos has to offer.
#2 Whale Watching in Los Cabos (December to April)

this is one of the The most exciting experiences I've had in Los Cabos! Between December and April, thousands of humpback whales migrate from icy Alaska to the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez to breed and give birth.
You can see these gentle giants leaping, slapping their flippers, and even caring for their calves. Often, whales approach the boats, creating unforgettable moments. The best tours depart early in the morning (6-7 am) when the sea is calmer.
What I experienced: On one of my visits, a whale with its calf came so close to the boat that the crew asked everyone to move away from the shore. The calf seemed curious—it circled around for almost ten minutes while its mother waited a few meters away. The silence on board was total. These are the kinds of scenes that no photo can truly capture.
Important tip: If you want to take the tour cheaply, go to Playa Médano and look for the vendors with shiny vests. When you arrive, try speaking Spanish, saying... “Good luck, friend. I want to see the ballenas at the price of Mexicans”This way you can get a tour for half the price (approximately 1000 pesos — 300 reais). I've done this several times and it works.
#3 Wild Canyon Adventures: Adrenaline in the Desert

If you like adventure, Wild Canyon It's a must-see! Located in the stunning Tule Canyon, this park offers:
- Zip lines: One of the largest zipline networks in Baja California, with spectacular aerial views of the canyons and the Sea of Cortez.
- Suspension bridge: Cross suspension bridges dozens of meters high.
- UTV tours: Explore the desert in 4x4 vehicles, traversing thrilling trails.
- Camello Safari: A unique camel riding experience through the desert (yes, there are camels in Los Cabos!)
The park has excellent safety measures and is perfect for families with children over 8 years old. The contrast of zip-lining over the arid desert with the blue Sea of Cortez in the background is one of the most unusual images you'll take away from Mexico.
#4 Mexican Cooking Class

Immerse yourself in the local culture with a traditional Mexican cooking class! Several experiences are available:
- Flora's Field Kitchen (San José del Cabo): Farm-to-table classes where you harvest fresh ingredients from the organic garden and learn to prepare authentic Baja California dishes. One of my favorite culinary experiences in the entire region—the table under the trees with the mountains in the background is a scene you won't forget.
- Cookart (San José del Cabo): Interactive classes where you learn to make tortillas by hand, prepare fresh salsas, authentic tacos, and even tequila tasting. It's a delicious way to experience Mexican culture, learn techniques you can use at home, and of course, eat very well!
- Bonus: You can take the recipes home and surprise your friends by replicating Mexican cuisine in Brazil!
#5 Sunset Cruise: Sail at Sunset

Um A sunset boat trip is almost mandatory in Los Cabos. Watching the sun set behind the iconic Arc de Triomphe while sailing along the Sea of Cortez with a drink in hand is pure magic.
Available options:
- Catamarans with a party: Music, open bar, lively atmosphere (perfect for groups)
- Romantic sailboats: Intimate atmosphere with fewer people (ideal for couples)
- Private yachts: For those who want total exclusivity.
Many tours include an open bar, snacks or dinner, and some even stop at secluded beaches for a quick swim before sunset.
Best time: The sunsets in Los Cabos are spectacular year-round, but in winter they happen earlier (around 18 pm), while in summer they can be around 20 pm. If you're going during whale watching season, ask the captain to keep an eye out—I've seen whales jump during sunset on one of those cruises.
#6 Santa Maria Beach

On your trip to Los Cabos you can't miss a visit to this paradisiacal horseshoe-shaped cove.
Santa María Beach is a paradise for snorkeling and diving, thanks to its clear, generally calm, turquoise waters. It's situated within a protected sanctuary, so there's a rich underwater life comprised of many colorful fish and diverse flora and fauna clinging to the rocky walls.
Practical tip: Bring your own snorkeling equipment — rentals nearby are expensive and the gear isn't always in good condition. Arrive before 9 am to find the beach almost empty.
You can access the beach on tours that depart from Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

#7 El Medano Beach

Located near Cabo San Lucas, this beach is one of the most popular in the area and, for many, one of the best. From there, you can see the tip of the peninsula, known as "the end of the land." Its waters are calm and the sand is very white.
There you can also go snorkeling, diving, and skydiving on the beach. The sunset over the Pacific seen from Médano is spectacular — and it's from here that most of the whale watching tour vendors depart, as I explained in #2.
#8 El Chileno Beach

This beach on the maritime corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo stands out for its calm waters and the relaxing shade offered by its palm trees.
You can rent equipment to enjoy the beach, and boat trips to nearby attractions are also offered. Visitors to this beach can enjoy snorkeling, diving, kayaking, or simply swimming. Showers are available.

#9 Cabo Pulmo National Park

This protected area of the Sea of Cortez possesses several attributes that make it very special. It is the only reef on the Baja California peninsula and the only living one in North America. In 20 years of protection, marine biomass has increased by 463%—it is considered one of the greatest marine conservation success stories in the world.
The nearest city is Cabo San Lucas, located just over 60 kilometers away. Among the most abundant species in its waters are mother-of-pearl, lobster and oyster, while reptiles predominate on land.
My experience in Cabo Pulmo: I rented a car in Cabo San Lucas and drove there—part of the road is unpaved, but the route is perfectly passable. I decided to stay one night in a simple little hotel in the village, and it was one of the best decisions I made. On the second day, I went snorkeling twice and saw schools of hammerhead sharks just a few meters from me. Cabo Pulmo has underwater life that rivals the best diving spots in the world, and few Brazilians know this.
Mexico Guide Tip: To reach this paradise I rented a car and it was a very pleasant trip (a good part of it is on dirt roads). My suggestion is that you stay one night in a simple hotel in the area to enjoy an extra day of diving and snorkeling, as the place is one of the best in the world for seeing diverse species.

#10 Palmilla Beach

It is another magnificent option in the beach corridor located between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. It has a varied ocean life, making it ideal for practicing underwater entertainment.
Fishermen also enjoy their favorite activity in Palmilla. Use the typical pangas, small boats that you can use to tour the nearby attractions or take a fishing tour. Occasionally, there are waves good enough for surfing.
#11 Balandra Beach

Playa Balandra, located in Baja California Sur, is one of the beautiful spots you'll find in the municipality of La Paz. The beach is part of a Protected Natural Area, and to access it you will have to travel from La Paz by car, taxi, or bus, a journey of approximately 30 minutes.
If you are vacationing in Los Cabos, It's a highly recommended tour. There are also boats that offer beautiful tours in Balandra, Isla Espiritu Santo, and other beautiful places in Baja California Sur.
Important information for visiting Playa Balandra
- Turn 1: 08:00 AM to 12:00 PM (4 hours stay)
- Turn 2: 13:00 AM to 17:00 PM (4 hours stay)
- Capacity: Maximum of 450 visitors per shift (total of 900 people per day)
⚠️ IMPORTANT: It is mandatory to purchase the wristband (access bracelet) upon arrival at the beach entrance. Arrive early—places fill up quickly, especially during peak season. The wristband costs 120 pesos for foreigners and 60 pesos for Mexicans.
#12 Art galleries in San Jose del Cabo

During peak season, the streets of San José del Cabo are closed to traffic, creating a pleasant space for walking and shopping. Often, the crafts are sold by their creators themselves, with whom it's possible to have a relaxed conversation about their work.
Personal tip: Go on a Thursday night — that's when the famous Art Walk takes place in the historic center, with galleries open late, artists present, and lots of street life. It's one of the most pleasant nights you can spend in all of Mexico.
The shops close late at night and the place is very pleasant to have a drink and enjoy some good music.

This is the estuary of the San José River where it meets the Pacific Ocean. In this 50-hectare paradise, located near San José del Cabo, the meeting of fresh and salt waters creates a habitat that is ideal for the proliferation of particular species of flora and fauna.
It has abundant vegetation and you might be lucky enough to see a cock-of-the-rock — one of the few birds that migrate from south to north, stopping at this estuary.
#14 Miraflores

It's a city located just over 40 kilometers from San José del Cabo, which has an excellent tradition in the production of products made from pitaya, a cactus fruit that in its red version is better known as dragon fruit. The people of Miraflores prepare it in various ways and offer it to tourists. The Pitahaya Fair takes place in July.
Mexico Guide Tip: Download the offline map on Google Maps, as internet access can be unreliable in the area and you might get lost before finding the center of Miraflores.
#15 Santiago

This small town, located 45 kilometers from San José del Cabo, was the site of the 18th-century Jesuit mission Santiago de los Coras Aiñiní. After the expulsion of the Jesuits, the mission was administered by Franciscan and Dominican monks until it was abandoned. The current church is a later reconstruction.
Santiago enjoyed for a time the distinction of being the only city with a zoo in Baja California Sur. It also has a fossil site. It’s worth exploring!
#16 Try the Seafood

In Baja California, you can choose between seafood from the secluded Sea of Cortez or the Pacific Ocean. From both sides, they harvest fish and shellfish to prepare delicacies worthy of the most discerning palate.
You can order soups, ceviches, cocktails, and anything else you like. Seafood with shrimp, squid, octopus, clams, mussels, crabs, fish, and other species is an excellent selection. The freshness of the seafood in Los Cabos is unparalleled—the fishing boats arrive at the dock every morning, and the restaurants buy directly from the fishermen. Enjoy your meal!

Getting around Los Cabos

If you only plan to stay in the Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo area, it is not necessary to rent a car. You can use public transportation between the two cities (departing from Puerto Paraiso Mall) or take a taxi.
If you want to explore the neighboring colonial towns to connect more with Mexican culture—as I did to get to Cabo Pulmo and Todos Santos—renting a car is much more appealing. This way you'll have the freedom to visit several places in a single day.
