The C-56 Juan Escutia was deliberately sunk on October 28, 2000, as an artificial reef, 2 km off the coast and 30 meters deep. The ship is 60 meters long and has three diving decks, and it is common to see rays and groupers weighing up to 150 kg on the upper deck. Reaching the site takes about 20 minutes by boat from Puerto Morelos. Due to the depth and moderate current, it is recommended for advanced divers.

The modern history of the city began in the late 19th century, when the East Coast Colonization Company of Yucatán started using the area as a transshipment point for forest products. 14 km south of Puerto Morelos, on the way to Playa del Carmen, lies one of the calmest and least frequented beaches in the Mexican Caribbean.
